Stretching along the Bay of Bengal, Puri Beach is one of the most visited beaches in India and the beating heart of coastal Odisha. Unlike the tropical beaches of Goa or Kerala, Puri Beach has a distinctive energy — part pilgrimage destination, part seaside resort, part cultural canvas. The beach is a place where devotees wash away their sins at dawn, fishermen haul in the morning catch, families build sand sculptures, and travellers simply sit and listen to the waves.
Getting to the Beach
Puri Beach runs along the southern edge of the town. Most hotels along Marine Drive (Chakratirtha Road) are within a few minutes' walk of the shore. From the Jagannath Temple, the beach is roughly 2 kilometres away — accessible by auto-rickshaw, cycle-rickshaw, or a pleasant 20-minute walk through the town.
Best Time to Visit the Beach
- Early morning (5:30 AM – 7:30 AM): The most magical time. Sunrise over the Bay of Bengal is stunning, the beach is quiet, and you can watch fishermen set out in their traditional boats.
- Evening (5:00 PM – 7:00 PM): The beach comes alive with vendors, local snacks, and the soft golden light of sunset.
- Avoid midday in summer — the sand gets extremely hot between May and June.
Swimming & Sea Safety
The waters at Puri can be deceptively strong. The undertow and rip currents here are a serious concern, especially during and after the monsoon season (June–September). Here are essential safety rules:
- Only swim in designated zones marked by lifeguard stations — they are clearly marked with flags along the beach.
- Obey red flag warnings, which indicate dangerous conditions and prohibit swimming entirely.
- Children should never enter the water without adult supervision.
- Avoid swimming alone, particularly at dawn or dusk.
- Local nolia (traditional fishermen lifeguards) are stationed along the beach and can assist in emergencies.

- Sand Art: Puri is internationally renowned for its sand art. Master sand artists create extraordinary sculptures on the beach, often depicting mythological scenes. Watch them at work or attend the annual Puri Beach Festival in November.
- Camel & Horse Rides: Popular with families, rides along the shoreline are available for hire.
- Fresh Seafood: Several stalls and restaurants along the beachfront serve freshly cooked fish, crab, and prawn — a must-try.
- Boat Rides: Country boat rides are available at the fishing harbour end of the beach.
